TRAINING FOR BUILDING AUTOMATION CONTRACTORS

Building Management System technical training

Professional development for BMS engineers and managers

Training for BMS Engineers and Managers

Our courses build on the product training provided by BMS companies to develop engineers into professionals who justify repeat work, earn higher fees, and drive business growth.

  • Self-paced online training courses.

  • Video, audio and text lessons.

  • Done-for-you Microsoft Word, Excel, and Visio design templates.

  • One-off payment for individual courses.

  • Lifetime access (for as long as the training business exists).

Chiller Management System Design Course

This course will teach you how to design the control strategies, graphics, alarms, trends, and reports. The visualisation of the chiller control system is an extremely powerful part of this course. If you develop just 50% of what you learn here, you will have a product that differentiates you and your company from your competitors.

22 Video lessons (4 hours). 12 Audio lessons (1 hour).

Graphics design course

The graphics are what the customer uses; it’s what they can see with their eyeballs. You can have the best hardware design, but if your software design is average, then the client, the consultant, and the wider industry will think your BMS is average.

29 Video lessons (5h52m).

Energy Management System design course

You can not properly tune a complex control system without some form of EMS. Many buildings have electric, water, gas, and thermal meters installed, but no one is looking at the data. Why? Because the data isn’t presented in a useful way. Learn how to design an EMS that saves the client money and makes money for the BMS contractor.

15 Video lessons (3 hours)

Advanced Optimal Start design course

Optimal start is a building-wide control strategy. We are not just pre-starting the building; all systems need to switch into a different mode and operate completely differently from normal mode. Optimal start was originally designed around comfort control, not energy efficiency. We need a complete redesign.

7 Audio lessons (47m).

Project Management for Engineers course

This course steps through the exact process that I perfected over 4 years. When something went wrong, I updated my process so it wouldn’t happen again. I was obsessed with success and making money. After a couple of years of finding my way, I had generated over $90,000 in pure profit over and above all my projects forecasted margins.

38 Audio lessons (3h34m). 1 Video lesson (15m).

BMS for Mechanical Consultants course

This course was developed by a BMS consultant for mechanical consultants involved in Building Management System projects. You are more likely to have BMS problems at handover than mechanical problems. This 12-hour course will genuinely change the outcome of your projects.

94 Video lessons, 12 hours.

Points list design course

If you are starting your BMS design journey, I’d suggest you start with the points list. The points list is much more than just a bunch of points allocated to controllers. Regardless of how experienced you are, you will learn something in this course.

11 Video lessons (2h8m).

Control Panel Design Course

Learn how to design BMS control panels. Microsoft Visio templates are provided to get you started.

6 Video lessons (1h14m).

Network Design Course

Learn how to design BMS networks. Microsoft Visio templates are provided to get you started.

19 Video lessons (2h20m).

Commissioning course

Commissioning is not just about testing the physical inputs and outputs; we are also supposed to commission the control strategies, high-level interfaces, and validate the meters. Learn how to reduce risk during the commissioning phase as you approach handover.

21 Video lessons (3h55m).

BMS Optimisation course

Many of the other individual courses have optimisation (energy efficiency) parts to them. E.g., chilled water systems, EMS, etc. This course discusses optimisation outside of the HVAC control system.

32 Video lessons (5h10m).

Free BMS training

We don’t really have free training courses; however, there are a bunch of courses in the Learning Management System that I am still working on. I.e., I still need to finish them, and until they are finished, I allow people to access them for free. When they have progressed to a point where I feel the topic is complete, I change them from free to paid.

I have a very high BMS consulting workload, so I don’t always start and finish a course in one go. I create lessons when I get a few days free, and sometimes I get excited about a new course, and I don’t finish the two or three I was working on in parallel. There is usually something for free in the Learning Management System.

OUR MISSION

Progress and innovation in the BMS industry are limited by the disconnect between the building owners, consultants, and BMS contractors.

Each individually providing value, but in isolation of understanding the priorities and constraints of the other.

Our mission is to tie together the various stakeholders in the building automation industry, to form a coordinated, unified approach.

Bryce Anderson

For the first 15 years of my career (1998-2013), I worked for BMS companies (2 years in South Africa, 9 years in London, and 4 years in Australia). For the next +10 years (from 2014 onwards), I have worked as a BMS specialist consultant. I originally studied electronic engineering, specialising in process instrumentation and controls.

In my consulting business (80% of my working week), I am designing (writing specifications), reviewing BMS contractor technical submissions, witnessing and signing off BMS projects from all major BMS systems and a wide range of different BMS companies, from global tier-1 manufacturers to smaller system integrators.

This puts me in a unique situation where I have visibility into what everyone is doing. The experience I share in the membership is made up from my own personal 15 years designing BMS systems, writing software code, commissioning, service and project management (across 3 different regions), plus the best parts of what the industry is providing.

This exposure to the wider industry allows me to provide customised training courses that not only teach the technical side of the BMS but also address current real-life issues and constraints in the Building Management System industry.

I am not just teaching you what I learned, but the best of what everyone else is doing.
